Dong Nan backstage at Beijing's Mao Livehouse : Dong Nan (22) plays guitar in a street punk band. At the moment every aspect of his life feels bad, but he hopes to become wealthy and be able to do the things he wants to do in the future.
Dong Nan backstage at Beijing's Mao Livehouse		 Mr. Bao at his workplace : Mr. Bao (48) is a pedicurist, practicing the 2000 years old Xiujiao method that has been maintained in his family for over 170 years. He moves every few years to another Chinese city to transfer his skills to young pedicurists.
Mr. Bao at his workplace		 Mr. Chen at his workplace : Mr. Chen (52) is a janitor at a depot for public buses in Beijing. He thinks a person can live well everywhere with lots of money, but can only live happy without money in his hometown.

Mr. Lu in the reception room of the observatory : Mr. Lu (30) is an astronomer at the Beijing Ancient Observatory. He also leads the Chinese team for the International Astronomy Olympiad. He thinks he is more traditional than his peers and organizes his life based on old Chinese values.
Mr. Lu in the reception room of the observatory		 Mr. Song in his living room : Mr. Song (75) is an archeologist and retired curator of the National Museum of China. He spent his life researching the traditional cultures of many minorities in China. It sometimes hurts when thinking of the past, because everything has changed.
Mr. Song in his living room		 Mr. Yang's bird shop : Mr. Yang having lunch with friends in his bird shop. Mr. Yang is the 3rd generation in his family selling birds. Family is most important to him. His favorite activities are drinking alcohol with friends and reading about birds.

Mr. Yuan in his meeting room : Mr. Yuan is the abbot of the Taoist DongYue temple in Beijing. His favorite activities are reading, writing and thinking. He thinks young people are too self-centered these days. People should try to strengthen social values by contributing to society.
Mr. Yuan in his meeting room		 Mrs. Lü in her living room : Mrs. Lü teaches Zither at the Conservatory of Music. She thinks the most important things in life are love and family. She’s not sure she is right, as many people think work and knowing influential people are more important.
Mrs. Lü in her living room		 Mrs. Zhang in her living room : Mrs. Zhang (68) is a retired accountant. Coming from a poor family, she started work at very young age and attended school in the evening. Now, her biggest passion is feeding around 30 stray cats in a park every day.

Why Reason during a rehearsal : Rehearsal of the Beijing based street punk band Why Reason in an underground basement. Three of the members are currently unemployed. Their music is not favored by authorities. Bigger venues are off-limits; they can only perform in small clubs.
